Heat therapy is one of the proven effective solutions for those who struggle with stress, stiffness, aches, and pains in the body or those looking for a good night’s sleep. People have reaped impressive benefits of the sauna for decades, particularly from infrared saunas, which utilize the healing therapy of infrared lights.

Thanks to technology, you can experience the therapeutic effects of infrared heat in the comfort of your home. And while you can always get a cabin-style infrared sauna for personal use, a more compact, convenient, and much cheaper option exists. Infrared mats.

And as at-home infrared treatments go, one that gets a lot of hype is from HigherDose. While most infrared mats are limited to just infrared therapy, this one boasts two powerful healing technologies—infrared heat and PEMF. The HigherDose infrared mat promises to recharge your mind and body, give you a full-body reset, and elevate your wellness game. It’s an at-home infrared-PEMF device that gives you home sauna benefits without intense sweat.

Now, that sounds like something every self-care and wellness fanatic should have at home. But like any purchase, it’s smart to do your due diligence. Hence, we’ve created this detailed HigherDose PEMF mat review.

Keep reading and learn more about the benefits of PEMF, how to use it to get your desired results, and decide if it would be a worthy investment for your wellness journey.

What Is PEMF?

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field, a technology used in a type of therapy that utilizes electromagnetic fields to stimulate the cells in the body in a non-invasive method.

PEMF therapy works by sending pulses of magnetic fields in varying frequencies across the body. These small bursts of EMFs mimic the natural frequency projected by the Earth.

And this energy works with the natural electric field of your body to improve healing. Not only will it help increase electrolytes and ions, but it naturally influences changes in the body on a cellular level. It restores balance to damaged cells, correcting cellular dysfunction and effectively helping with your body’s natural recovery process.

PEMF has been used as a therapy to treat aches and pains for decades. In fact, NASA pioneered the study on PEMF technology, initially meant to stimulate bone healing, treat nonunion fractures, and maintain the health of astronauts in orbit.

Since then, studies have supported claims of the clinically beneficial effects of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, including reducing inflammation, relieving pain, bone and muscle repair, and helping with anxiety and depression.

What Does the HigherDose PEMF Mat Do?

The HigherDose Infrared PEMF Go mat combines PEMF therapy and infrared heat. The PEMF technology helps with the body’s self-rejuvenating capabilities to relieve stress and boost the body’s natural healing process. Meanwhile, infrared heat promotes a full body detox, helps relieve pain and fatigue, reduces inflammation, and flushes out toxins.

But that’s only two of the four therapeutic layers of the HigherDose mat. It has two extra complementary therapies: a crystal layer and charcoal, clay, and magnetic strip layer. And combining each of their therapeutic benefits, the HigherDose mat becomes an all-in-1 relaxation, recovery, and wellness tool.

Features

First, we take a closer dive at the features you can get from the HigherDose Infrared PEMF mat. We’ll cover everything that makes this PEMF mat different from others in the market.

PEMF Therapy

When looking for a quality PEMF device, one of the important criteria to look for is the PEMF therapy stats. That includes the range of frequencies and intensities a PEMF mat offers. As for the HigherDose mat, it comes with two PEMF cores.

There are four frequency settings or levels to choose from—3Hz, 7.8Hz, 10Hz, and 23 Hz. Each frequency option has its healing qualities, with the lowest frequency levels being more relaxing and effective in giving you restful sleep and the highest levels more stimulating and can give you an instant energy boost.

Far-Infrared Therapy

A PEMF mat, on its own, can offer plenty in terms of wellness and health. But when combined with other therapies, you simply get a double dose of those benefits. And the PEMF mat from HigherDose features an infrared layer.

It uses far-infrared heat, a deeply penetrating infrared wavelength that effectively improves relaxation and removes toxins. The far-infrared heater has a temperature range from 96°F (36°C) to 158°F (70°C), giving you a wide range of heat settings to choose from.

Crystal Therapy

The HigherDose mat has even more complementary therapies. One of which is crystal therapy, which is believed to bring balance to mind and body. Many infrared heating pads rely on one or more different crystals or gemstones.

The HigherDose mat comes with a crystal layer made of crushed purple Amethyst and black Tourmaline, both giving off a high amount of negative ions and emitting balancing electrical waves. This layer can deepen the stress relief and mood-boosting effects of negative ions from infrared therapy.

Multi-Layered Design

The multi-layered design of the HigherDose PEMF mat gives it a boost of performance. Besides the PEMF, far-infrared, and crystal layers, it has a fourth alternative therapy layer consisting of charcoal, clay, and magnetic strips. Each of these layers aims to boost the benefits you get from the device.

    • Charcoal layer. Charcoal is an effective natural treatment used to flush out chemicals and toxins trapped in the body. It could boost the detoxification process during heat therapy.
    • Clay layer. The clay carries a strong negative charge, and those beneficial negative ions it emits have a calming and purifying effect. In addition, the clay layer helps balance the heat, so it spreads out more evenly across the therapy mat and into the body.
    • Magnetic layer. This layer is made of medical-grade magnetic strips believed to improve blood flow and circulation.

Non-Toxic Materials

Out of the box, the mat looks durable and well-constructed. The exterior is made of sleek black non-toxic polyurethane leather. The soft-to-touch PU skin passed all non-VOC standards, so it’s safe for you as well as the environment.

And besides the material’s durability, it has the must-have characteristics you need from a heating mat—waterproof, fireproof, and melt-proof.

Low EMF

Heating pads emit EMF radiation. Although low in most cases and safe, you’ll want to look for an infrared heating pad with low to zero EMF claim, especially because it’s kept close to the body when in use.

The infrared PEMF mat from HigherDose can generate a good amount of heat but emits only around 0.2 to 0.8 milligauss, which is a pretty safe level, considering the 2 milligauss global TOC criteria.

Easy to Use

There is no complicated assembly or setup for this PEMF mat. Just roll the mat out, plug it in, set it up with your preferred settings, and the device is ready.

This Infrared PEMF mat is also pretty easy to operate. It has a small handheld controller you can use to select and set desired levels of the PEMF and infrared heat separately. Using it couldn’t be any easier. Best of all, a simple clean-up is needed after every session. Simply wipe the mat down to clean any sweat after you’re done.

Portable

Another advantageous feature of the HigherDose Go mat is it’s an incredibly portable device. It’s designed for people who are on the go—lightweight and can be easily rolled up and packed away for storage or taken on the road with you.

The Go mat is a lighter and smaller version of the full-sized HigherDose infrared PEMF mat.

Benefits

PEMF is a powerful relaxing and recovery tool. Coupled with far-infrared therapy, negative ion therapy, and crystal therapy, we run through the benefits you can expect from using the HigherDose PEMF Go mat below.

Deep Relaxation

One of the immediate benefits of the PEMF mat is relaxation. The slow and gentle pulses similar to the Earth’s frequency put the body in a parasympathetic response. It slows down the nervous system, lowering your blood pressure and heart rate and ultimately putting you in a relaxed state of mind. Ultimately, the body follows, and you feel less tense and more relaxed.

In the same way, the heat generated from infrared therapy helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

By marrying the two therapies, the HigherDose PEMF mat fosters a deeper sense of calmness in both mind and body. A restful, quality sleep at night is another one of the positive results you can expect from using this device.

Inside-Out Recovery

While the heat you get from using this infrared PEMF mat is not as intense as inside a sauna, the targeted heat is effective in relieving stiffness and aches in specific areas of the body. For example, if your lower back feels a bit stiff after an intense workout, the mat could heat your lower back and relieve the pain without needing to heat the entire body.

But it doesn’t only help relieve tired muscles. For one, PEMF is like a cellular exercise. It can penetrate through the body, support cellular regeneration, and activate the body’s natural healing response. In the same way, infrared therapy promotes cellular metabolism. It triggers the repair and growth of new cells and tissues for faster regeneration. Far infrared, in particular, effectively relieves pain and reduces inflammation to hasten muscle recovery.

In other words, this device’s combination of infrared and PEMF helps the body recover from the inside out.

Increased Energy

Depending on the frequency, you can expect a good boost of energy from using the HigherDose mat. Higher PEMF levels can stimulate sluggish cells, recharging your system from deep inside and ultimately increasing your physical energy.

In the same way, the deep penetrating heat of far-infrared therapy improves blood circulation and oxygenation. It promotes the optimal function of tissues and organs, therefore restoring your energy.

Detoxification

The HigherDose mat can boost the body’s detox process. Using infrared heat can trigger a detox reaction. And while you won’t sweat out toxins using this mat as you would in a traditional sauna, the far-infrared heat that penetrates deep in the body does help with lymphatic cleansing.

On the other hand, PEMF can support the body’s detoxification by stimulating cellular activity. By increasing cell oxygenation, PEMF allows the cells in the body to regenerate faster and detox on their own.

Disadvantages of the HigherDose PEMF Mat

The HigherDose PEMF mat can do a lot to boost your physical and mental well-being but beware of these drawbacks you need to be aware of before buying one.

Only partial body coverage

The Go Mat is a smaller version of HigherDose’s Infrared PMEF mat. It means it’s not big enough for your whole body at once, not suitable for an all-over heating experience. It can only heat up specific body areas at any moment.

Also, the mat only has a single heating surface. It’s not similar to sauna blankets that can heat your body from all sides. You’ll need to rotate your body if you want to heat both your front and back.

No intense sweating

If you want to have an intense sweating session as you can experience in either a dry vs. wet sauna, you’ll be sorely disappointed when using this mat. Although it’s effective in heating the body, this Infrared PEMF mat is not designed to trigger intense sweat.

How to Use the HigherDose PEMF Mat?

The mat comes with a simple-to-use handheld controller where you can select and set the PEMF and heat settings. There are two buttons—power (for heat) and PEMF—and a small dial used to select the level or intensity for each.

Below, we’ll walk you through using the HigherDose mat.

Using PEMF Therapy

The PEMF levels run from 1-4, with each frequency having a specific role and effect.

    • Level 1 (3Hz): Delta Brain Wave. Use this level to help you calm down when you’re anxious during the day or before sleep.
    • Level 2 (7.8Hz): Theta Brain Wave + Schumann Resonance. This level is also great if you are either feeling disconnected or overstimulated. It’s great for relaxing, fighting stress, finding focus, and cultivating creativity.
    • Level 3 (10Hz): Alpha Brain Wave. Use this level for wakeful relaxation, as it can help soothe the physical effects of stress. It can promote open-mindedness and mindfulness, which is great during meditation.
    • Level 4 (23Hz): Beta Brain Wave. Use this level if you find yourself feeling sluggish or in a mid-day slump. This PEMF frequency is stimulating and can give you that instant energy boost, improved concentration, memory, and overall mental function.

The PEMF settings are programmed for a 20-minute session followed by a 100-minute break per cycle, repeating four times before automatically shutting off completely. But you can shut off the PEMF function anytime you want using the handheld controller.

Using Far-Infrared Therapy

We recommend starting at the lower levels for beginners or if you’re sensitive to heat. You can work your way up the temperature settings as you start to feel comfortable with the infrared heat. The temperature levels run from 1-7; see below.

    • Level 1: 96°F (36°C)
    • Level 2: 106°F (41°C)
    • Level 3: 117°F (47°C)
    • Level 4: 127°F (53°C)
    • Level 5: 138°F (59°C)
    • Level 6: 147°F (64°C)
    • Level 7: 158°F (70°C)

But note that it can take up to one hour for the mat to heat up to the highest temperature level.

What Were My Results?

Using the HigherDose PEMF mat has plenty of potential benefits, and they honestly all sound good.

Understandably, you won’t experience all its benefits in one session, but some effects are pretty immediate. But I find that a short session on the mat can be incredibly relaxing. So, if you fell asleep lying down on the device, that’s completely understandable. Level 1-2 of the PEMF works great if you’re looking to snooze for a bit.

Cranking up the PEMF level as well as the heat does a lot for muscle relief as well. A few sessions in, I’ve felt significantly less sore after workouts than before. However, I found that turning up the heat up to Level 7 can get incredibly toasty.

All in all, I find that the mat would be a fantastic addition to any wellness routine. But one thing to note: Using the mat in the beginning, for several sessions straight, I noticed a bit of soreness in some areas like I’ve been working out, which I haven’t. It was confusing at first, but I found out that it was just the mat working. Increased blood circulation from the PEMF can sometimes lead to soreness in muscles you don’t often use.
